The Rough Guide to Britain
by Robert Andrews, Jules Brown, Rob Humphreys, Phil Lee, Donald Reid
If ever a nation were both hostage to and beneficiary of its history, it’s Britain. The single most important thing to remember when travelling here is that you’re visiting not one country, but three: England, Wales and Scotland. For visitors foreign and domestic, that means contending with three capital cities (London, Cardiff and Edinburgh) and three sets of national identity - not to mention the myriad accent shifts as you move between them. Edinburgh International Book Festival

The 2007 Edinburgh International Book Festival, will take place from 11 to 27 August, and will once again play host to the widest variety of authors. Novelists, poets, politicians, scientists, journalists, historians, biographers, will come from all over the world for what has now become the largest literary party of the year. The programme will be announced on the 14th of June.

The Edinburgh International Book Festival's remarkable success has led the way for a remarkable surge of new high profile initiatives, firmly establishing Edinburgh as a major international literary hotspot.

Since its inception, the Book Festival's home has been the beautiful and historic Charlotte Square Gardens, centrally located in Edinburgh's Georgian New Town. Each year the gardens are transformed into a magical tented village, which welcomed 215,000 visitors in 2006 - averaging 80% attendance for the events. The Book Festival has doubled its audience in the last few years and is the largest public celebration of books and ideas in the world.

Since the the 2004 Book Festival, there has been rapid progress in developing Edinburgh's status as a major year-round literary centre.

In 2006 633 authors from 25 countries took part in 681 events. 32% of tickets were sold within the first three days of availability.

Events featuring Nobel Prize winners Harold Pinter and Seamus Heaney sold out during the first weekend, as well as a number of Scottish authors including Ian Rankin and Alexander McCall Smith.

Catherine Lockerbie, Festival Director, said she was immensely proud of the 2006 programme:

"... bringing as it does some of the world's foremost political and economic thinkers to Scotland, including Francis Fukuyama and Joseph Stiglitz, as well as some of the greatest names in world literature visiting for the first time, such as the outstanding Ismail Kadare from Albania, hotly tipped for the Nobel and inaugural winner of the Man Booker International Prize.

Innovations in 2006 included "an unprecedented range of exclusive launches of eagerly awaited books; an adventurous new strand of overseas and debut fiction and poetry priced at just £5 or under; and a major series of autumn events. It all stems from a passionate belief that inspiring and challenging words and thoughts have never been more important or more in demand."

It has archaeology, including the Knap of Howar (the oldest standing domestic building in north-west Europe), an RSPB site where thousands of birds breed in early summer, beaches and seal colonies, cliff walks and just 60 inhabitants.
